Day 2: A Child is Born
“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6
A child is born.
The first thing that we see about Jesus, the promised Redeemer, is that He is just like us in our humanity where He had to be born.
Jesus. The Promised Messiah and Redeemer of God’s chosen people. Born into humanity as a weak and frail and dependent baby. This is a redeemer and a God who would be able to understand the frailty of His creation. He was born, just like all of creation since Cain and Abel.
He is not a far off or distant entity that has no grace or understanding for His creation that He so dearly loves. He chose to get down and dirty in His own creation to rescue us Himself.
A child is born.
Deity introduced into humanity.
A God and Savior who identifies with our own flesh and struggles.
This is the story of a God who loves deeply and desires to tenderly lead His people. He understands us.
Philippians 2:5-7 paints us this picture that, in His introduction in Bethlehem... through taking on human flesh, Jesus emptied Himself and humbled Himself in this rescue plan to come after our ever wandering hearts.
That is love.
That is grace.
That is Jesus.
Our Savior come. Our Redeemer who understands us.
Reflection: Take time today to think about how Jesus can understand and identify with the very issues that you find yourself facing. Make space for Him to come into those areas.
Prayer: Jesus, thank you for coming to get involved in my mess. Thank you for coming and identifying with my humanity so that I can truly see you as an example in my own life. Open my eyes more to see you!
