Psalms 22-24

Let's focus on chapter 23, which is one of the most famous psalms in all of the psalter (book of psalms). 

How are you finding comfort right now? I mean, really and practically. In the midst of a pandemic, how are you finding comfort, spiritually and emotionally? We all want to say "God" because that is the answer we are supposed to say, but some times our actions tell on us, don't they? 

Do you turn to a substance or addiction for comfort? Do you go to a habit to escape reality for comfort? Do you trust in your rationality and reasoning for comfort? Do you turn to a spouse or a parent for comfort? 

David's comfort in every season of his life is in the confidence of the presence of God, no matter the circumstances. Look closely at the object of David's psalm here. "The LORD is my shepherd...so I shall not want" (vs. 1) "HE makes me lie down in green pastures...HE leads me beside still waters." (Vs. 2) I will fear no evil for YOU are with me. (vs. 4) YOU prepare a table before me...(Vs. 5) I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever...(Vs. 6) 

For the sake of time, I just want you to notice the seasons that David walks through and his comfort in the presence of God never changes:

• Green pastures = prosperity
• Still waters = times of peace
• Valley of the shadow of death = loss, death, dark times, struggles
• In the presence of my enemies = relational conflict

No matter the season of life you walk through, you can find comfort today that God is with you.

Look at the end of the psalm. In verse 6, David says "I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever." We, as believers in Jesus Christ, have this comfort knowing that we get to spend an eternity with our creator where there will be no more sickness and death, no more fear, no more sadness, and no more conflict! Set your eyes on eternity! Find comfort in this reality today and glorify God in all that you do! Do not fear today because God is with you, now and forever!
