Psalms 58-60

Let's look at Psalm 59 this Easter Sunday morning.

Yesterday I told a story about my daughter, Campbell, jumping in my arms because of her fear from a stray dog. Well later that night, Campbell struggled to go to bed for fear of the dog coming in through her window. Now to my wife and I this was laughable because her bedroom sits above our basement and is the highest window in the whole house. But this was her fear. So we had to, in a loving way, assure her that no dog would be able to come through her window. After Casey and I tucked her in, we had a good chuckle over her irrational fear.

David, in this psalm, says that God laughs at Davids enemies.  From verses 1-7, David is asking God to deliver him from his enemies and explaining how his enemies are after him.  And in verse 8, he says, "But you O lord, laugh at them."

I want us to think about this reality! What we think of as a big enemy, what we are fearful of, God laughs at. I don't mean that God laughs because he doesn't care; He laughs because He can see the end from the beginning!

I care so much about my daughter's fears. Even when they are irrational, I reassure her that she will be ok and that I will be with her!

This is what David is saying! It's like saying that God gets the last laugh! He says, "My God in his steadfast love will meet me; God will let me look in triumph over my enemies."

Being that today is Easter, I want you to know that when Jesus rose from the dead, he defeated death, our greatest enemy, on our behalf! Jesus is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end, and our enemies have already been defeated! It may look like things are bad, our enemies may look big, but our God, who sees the beginning and the end, will get the last laugh and will ultimately triumph when Christ returns!

Verses 16-17 are an ending of praise from David to God! I want you to take a moment this morning. Think about the resurrection, and say these final verses out loud, in confidence, because the LIFE, DEATH, and RESURRECTION of Jesus is worth praising!!!
